EXTREME SUCCESS
The New Hampshire Library Trustees Association (The oldest library trustees association in the United States -50 years and counting) held its annual conference on May 14, 2008 at the North Conway Grand Hotel in North Conway. It was wonderful to welcome 165 public library trustees, Friends of libraries and library directors to a full day of activities starting with a delicious continental breakfast.
The keynote speaker, Melissa A. Martin, Attorney, partner in Martin, Lord and Osman P.A. of Lebanon, New Hampshire who specializes in Library Law, did an exceptionally fine job of describing the obligations and legal responsibilities of public library trustees.
During the rest of the day sessions were held to discuss various functions required of library trustees such as budgeting, personnel policies, disaster planning, performance review, policy writing, board officer responsibilities, money, and long range planning. As a sign that public trustees throughout New Hampshire are alive, up and coming, and looking to the future, the session on Long Range Planning was attended by 63 interested trustees and directors. All of the other sessions were well attended also.
During the business meeting portion of the meeting; Robert Gilbert of Brentwood was elected Vice President, Thomas Wallace of Rumney-Treasurer, Conrad Moses of East Kingston, Craig Wark of Stratham, Emma Smith of Sunapee and Judith Russell o Lyme as Directors. Jean Abbott of Dalton, President of NHLTA was extremely pleased with the attendance, presentations, and overall success of the 2008 conference.
