Did You Know?

NHLTA launched ListServ just for Trustees. Subscribe at: http://maillist2.nh.gov/mailman/listinfo/nhlta-l. Ask your library directors about the value of their ListServ; how information is shared from library to library. Now trustees have their own means of communicating and sharing. You are not alone—there are about 1200 other trustees in NH.

If you have any questions, contact Dave Hallenbeck (administrator of the ListServ) at dth@concur.mv.com.

Dealing with budget problems! Read how one library is coping—granted it is a huge library but it’s a solution to a problem all trustees are experiencing. This is a good website to keep track of things happening at libraries around the country.

Check out this very interesting website—Geek the Library—especially Recent News and take the Quiz.

Library Journal offers news for everyone—regardless of library size or budget—you may find a nugget of an idea for your library.

5 Myths About the Information Age

Everyone should read this great article about Libraries and the ‘Information Age’, published in The Chronicle of Higher Education, April 20, 2011. The essay written by Robert Darnton, professor and university librarian at Harvard University, is based on a talk he gave last month at the Council of Independent Colleges' Symposium on the Future of the Humanities, in Washington, DC.

The book will be sent to your library through NHSL van delivery system. The list is in PDF format and is downloadable.

PDF files are opened using Adobe Acrobat Reader, available at Adobe's web site.

“The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a federal law enacted by Congress to address concerns about access to offensive content over the Internet on school and library computers. CIPA imposes certain types of requirements on any school or library that receives funding for Internet access or internal connections from the E-rate program – a program that makes certain communications technology more affordable for eligible schools and libraries. In early 2001, the FCC issued rules implementing CIPA.”
Quoted from the US Government Federal Communications Commission: www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/cipa.html

More information about CIPA is also available on the NH State Library website at http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/lds/childrens_internet.html and on the ALA website at http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/advocacy/federallegislation/cipa/index.cfm

NH Law (RSA 202-A:14 ) allows for reimbursement to Trustees of travel expenses to attend professional meetings.

(RSA 202-A:14 ) Compensation of Trustees.

No trustee of any public library shall receive any compensation for any services rendered as such trustee, unless compensation is stipulated in the terms of the bequest or gift establishing the library. Trustees may be reimbursed, however, for necessary travel expenses to attend professional meetings.
